Gangelt is a municipality in the district of Heinsberg, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is on the border with the Netherlands and about 10 km east of Sittard and 10 km south-west of Heinsberg. Gangelt was the town in which Gerard Kremer, better known as Gerardus Mercator, lived for the first five or six years of his life.

The Polish alphabet, ślōnskij gŏdki (Silesian language), has been used for decades to annotate Silesian. Main reason behind that is the fact that large populations of Silesians are located in Poland, due to lack of education and representation in the past, it was the one used to write the down the language.

The Controversy

Writing in this alphabet is highly problematic due to the fact the letter ź can be noted down as ź or zi, which causes issues in Silesian in words such as zicherka.

It also raises an issue of erasing the true Silesian pronunciation - there is not singular way to write down ů in polish alphabet as well as numerous other sounds.

The word „Ślůnsk” is written down as Ślonsk, Ślónsk, Ślunsk or even Śląsk (there is no nasal o in our language).

Similarly that is the case with pre-labialisation in the word „ôrganizacyjŏ” (organisation), it is written as ło – łogranizacyjo, which orthographically is not recognised in Polish, ł usually is never used in beginning of words.

The polish alphabet is criticised for its inability to correctly annotate the language by the proponents of newer, better systems that accommodate for sounds not present in German, Polish as well as Czech.
