(trg)="10"> So in 1965 , I went to what was called the worst Bihar famine in India , and I saw starvation , death , people dying of hunger , for the first time .

(trg)="15"> The whole world is laid out for you , the best jobs are laid out for you , and you want to go and work in a village ?

(trg)="23"> " Dig wells for five years ?
(src)="24"> አለች : : " ህንድ ውስጥ ካሉት ውድ ትምሀርት ቤትና ኮሌጅ ተመረሀ ለ 5 ዓመት መቆፈር ፈልጋለው ትላለህ ? "
(trg)="24"> You went to the most expensive school and college in India , and you want to dig wells for five years ? "
(src)="25"> ለ ብዙ ጊዜ ኣላናገረቺኝም : : ምክንያቱም ቤተሰቤን ቅር ያሰኘው ነው የመሰላት : :
(trg)="25"> She didn 't speak to me for a very long time , because she thought I 'd let my family down .
(src)="26"> ነገር ገን ልዩ እውቀትና ሞያ ተማርኩኝ እጅግ በጣም ደሃ የሆኑ ሰዎች የሚያውቁት እድባዊ ትምህርት መቼም የማይሆን መቼም ያልተ ከበረ ፣ ስም ያለተሰጠው ውይም በትልቁ ያልታየ ።
(trg)="26"> But then , I was exposed to the most extraordinary knowledge and skills that very poor people have , which are never brought into the mainstream -- which is never identified , respected , applied on a large scale .

(trg)="32"> ( Laughter ) " You failed in your exam ? "

(trg)="33"> I said , " No . "
(src)="34"> " የመንግስት ስራ አጣህ ? " አሁንም ፥ አይደለም ፣ አልኩኝ

(src)="37"> የህንድ ሃገር ትምህርት ወደ ፓሪስ ፣ ኒው ዴሊህና ዙሪክ ነው ሊወስድህ የሚገባው እዚህ ባላገር ውስጥ ምን ትሰራለህ ?
(trg)="37"> The education system in India makes you look at Paris and New Delhi and Zurich ; what are you doing in this village ?

(trg)="38"> Is there something wrong with you you 're not telling us ? "
(src)="39"> " ኣይ ፤ ኮሌጅ መክፈት ነው ምፈልገው ለ ድሃ ብቻ የሚሆን ኮሌጅ ።
(trg)="39"> I said , " No , I want to actually start a college only for the poor .
(src)="40"> የድሃ ሐሳብ የሚከበርበትና የሚገለጽበት ። "
(trg)="40"> What the poor thought was important would be reflected in the college . "
(src)="41"> አዛውንቶቹም ይሄን ሰምተው ትልቅ መክር ሰጡኝ
(trg)="41"> So the elders gave me some very sound and profound advice .
(src)="42"> አንዲህ ኣሉኝ ፥ " እባክህን ... ዲግሪና ዲፕሎማ ያለውን ሰው እንዳታመጣብን እዚህ ኮሌጅ ውስጥ ። "
(trg)="42"> They said , " Please , don 't bring anyone with a degree and qualification into your college . "
(src)="43"> ስለዚህ ይሄ ኮሌጅ ብቻ ነው ህንድ ውስጥ ዶክቶሬት ወይም ማስትሬት ካላቹ ማይቀበላቹ ።
(trg)="43"> So it 's the only college in India where , if you should have a Ph.D. or a Master 's , you are disqualified to come .
(src)="44"> ያልተሳካላቹ ፣ ያልተሟላላቹ ፣ ወይም ከትምህርት ቤት ያቇረጣቹ መሆን አለባቹህ ኮሌጅ ውስጥ ለመግባት ።
(trg)="44"> You have to be a cop-out or a wash-out or a dropout to come to our college .

(src)="47"> ለማኅበረሰቡ ጥበብ እንዳላቹ ማሳየት አለባቹ አናም ለዚህ ማኅበረሰብ አገልግሎት ማሳየት ይገባቿል ።
(trg)="47"> You have to show that you have a skill that you can offer to the community and provide a service to the community .

(trg)="48"> So we started the Barefoot College , and we redefined professionalism .

(src)="50"> ባለሞያ ሰው ማለት ችሎታ ያለውና በራሱ የሚተማን ነው ።
(trg)="50"> A professional is someone who has a combination of competence , confidence and belief .
(src)="51"> ውሃ ኣስገኚ ( water diviner ) ባለሞያ ነው ።
(trg)="51"> A water diviner is a professional .
(src)="52"> ባህላዊ አዋላጅ ፤ ባለሞያ ናት ።
(trg)="52"> A traditional midwife is a professional .
(src)="53"> ባህላዊ ወጌሻ ባለሞያ ነው ።
(trg)="53"> A traditional bone setter is a professional .
(src)="54"> እነዚህ ዓለም ውስጥ ባጠቃላይ ባለሞያ ናቸው ።
(trg)="54"> These are professionals all over the world .
(src)="55"> የትም ገጠር ውስጥ ልታገኟቸው ትችላላቹ ።
(trg)="55"> You find them in any inaccessible village around the world .
(src)="56"> ስለዚህ አነዚህ ሰዎች ወደ መደበኛ ሂወት መምጣት ይገባቿል ብለን አሰብን ያላቸው እውቀትና ሞያ አቀፋዊ ነው ።
(trg)="56"> And we thought that these people should come into the mainstream and show that the knowledge and skills that they have is universal .
(src)="57"> መጠቀም አለበት ፣ ተግባር ላይ መዋል አለበት ። ዓለም ሁሉ ማወቅ አለበት እነዚህ እውቀቶችና ሞያዎች አግባብ እንዳላቸው ዛሬ ።
(trg)="57"> It needs to be used , needs to be applied , needs to be shown to the world outside -- that these knowledge and skills are relevant even today .
(src)="58"> ስለዚህ ኮሌጁ የ ማሕትማ ጋንዲን አኗኗርና አሰራርን የሚከተል ነው ።
(trg)="58"> So the college works following the lifestyle and workstyle of Mahatma Gandhi .
(src)="59"> መሬት ላይ ትበላለህ ፣ መሬት ላይ ትተኛለህ ፣ መሬት ላይ ትሰራለህ ።
(trg)="59"> You eat on the floor , you sleep on the floor , you work on the floor .

(trg)="60"> There are no contracts , no written contracts .
(src)="61"> ለ 20 ዓመት መቅረት ትችላልለህ ውይም ነገ መሄድ ትችላልለህ ።

(src)="62"> ደሞም ፣ ማንም ከ 100 ዶላር በላይ አያገኝም በውር ።
(trg)="62"> And no one can get more than $ 100 a month .
(src)="63"> ለገንዘብ ከመጣህ ቤርፉት ኮሌጅ ላንተ አይደለም ።
(trg)="63"> You come for the money , you don 't come to Barefoot College .
(src)="64"> ለስራና ለፍልምያ ነው ምትመጠው ያኔ ቤርፉት ኮሌጅ ላንት ነው ።
(trg)="64"> You come for the work and the challenge , you 'll come to the Barefoot College .
(src)="65"> ታድያ የፈለጋቹትን ሐሳብ ማቅረብ ትችላላቹ እዚህ ።

(src)="69"> አስተማሪ ተማሪ የሆነበትና ተማሪ አስተማሪ የሆነበት ኮሌጅ ይሄ ብቻ ነው ።
(trg)="69"> It 's the only college where the teacher is the learner and the learner is the teacher .
(src)="70"> ደሞም ፣ ይሄ ኮሌጅ ብቻ ነው ሰርቲፊኬት የማይሰጥበት ።
(trg)="70"> And it 's the only college where we don 't give a certificate .
(src)="71"> ባገለገልከው መሐበር ውስጥ ነው ምስጋና የሚደርስህ ።
(trg)="71"> You are certified by the community you serve .
(src)="72"> መሃንዲስ መሆንህን የሚያሳውቅ ግድግዳ ላይ ወረቀት መስቀል አያስፈለግህም ።
(trg)="72"> You don 't need a paper to hang on the wall to show that you are an engineer .
(src)="73"> አንደዛ ስላቸው " እንደሱ ከሆነ አስቲ ኣሳየን እንደሚቻል ?
(trg)="73.1"> So when I said that , they said , " Well show us what is possible .
(trg)="73.2"> What are you doing ?
(src)="74"> በለው ጠየቁኝ ። ወሬ ብቻ ምን ያረጋል ተግባር ካልታየ ? "
(trg)="74"> This is all mumbo-jumbo if you can 't show it on the ground . "
(src)="75"> አሉኝ ። ስለዚህ የመጀመሪያውን ቤርፉት ኮሌጅን ገነባን ። በ 1986 ( አ / አ )
(trg)="75"> So we built the first Barefoot College in 1986 .
(src)="76"> ሁለት ባዶ እግራቸው የሆኑ የህንፃ ነዳፊዎች ናቸው የገነቡት ማንበብና መጻፍ የማይችሉ በ ሜትር ካሬ 0.13 ሳንቲም ብቻ ( ዶላር )
(trg)="76"> It was built by 12 Barefoot architects who can 't read and write , built on $ 1.50 a sq. ft .

(trg)="81"> We are the only ones who actually returned the award for $ 50,000 , because they didn 't believe us , and we thought that they were actually casting aspersions on the Barefoot architects of Tilonia .

(trg)="82"> I asked a forester -- high-powered , paper-qualified expert -- I said , " What can you build in this place ? "

(src)="87"> እሺ ፣ እንግዲያውስ ገጠር ሄጄ አንዱን ሽማግሌ ልጠይቀው ፥ " እዚህ መሬት ላይ መን ምን ልዝራ ? " ፀጥ ብሎ ኣየኝና እንዲህ አለኝ ፥ " ይሄንን ፤ ያንን ፤ ይሄንን ፤ ስራና ሁሉም ይሳካል ። "
(trg)="87.1"> And I said , " Okay , I 'll go to the old man in village and say , ' What should I grow in this spot ? ' "
(trg)="87.2"> He looked quietly at me and said , " You build this , you build this , you put this , and it 'll work . "

(src)="92"> ( ሣቅታ ) የሆነ ስኳር መሳይ ማጣበቂያ ፤ የሆነ ዕንጨት ... ምናምን ሌላም ነገሮች ነበሪት ... ብቻ እኔጃ ።
(trg)="92"> ( Laughter ) It is a bit of jaggery , a bit of urens and a bit of other things I don 't know .
(src)="93"> ግን ምንም ውሃ አያሳልፍም ።
(trg)="93"> But it actually doesn 't leak .
(src)="94"> ከ 1986 ( አ / አ ) አስካሁን ድርስ አንድም ውሃ ጠብ አላለም ።

(src)="95"> ይሄንን ሙያ ሴቶቹ ከወንዶቹ ጋር ማካፈል አልፈለጉም ።

(src)="96"> ( ሣቅታ ) በዓለም ላይ ያኛ ኮሌጅ ብቻ ነው በ ፀሐይ ኀይል ኤሌክትሪኩ የሚሰራው ።

(src)="97"> ሁልም ሃይሉ ከ ፀሐይ ነው የሚመጣው ።
(trg)="97"> All the power comes from the sun .

(trg)="98"> 45 kilowatts of panels on the roof .
(src)="99"> ሁሉ ነገር በደንብ ነው የሰራው ለ 25 ዓመት ።
